Zack Greinke to the Brewers

After an eventful few weeks in MLB in terms of Free Agency acquisitions, the latest and greatest player to move is young Cy Young winner, Zack Greinke. After the Yankees were shut out of the Free Agency signings, which NEVER happens and especially after being turned down by prized free agent, Cliff Lee, many speculated that the Yankees would now turn their attention to the next best pitcher out there, Greinke. But in a surprising turn of events, the Kansas City Royals have traded Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Many question why the Brewers would make this move as they’re not considered to be close to contending and with their previous unwillingness to pay star players. They have played the small market card over the years by saying that they simply cannot afford to pay to keep their big time players. I tend to agree when you look at what they could have offered C.C. Sabbathia as compared to the contract he got from the Yankees. It also would appear that they’re not going to be able to pay to keep Prince Fielder when he’s a free agent next year.

But one thing that this trade does point to, is that the Brewers will likely hang onto Fielder through this season as opposed to trading him around the deadline to get something in return for him. The trade certainly seems to have caught baseball insiders off guard and we’ll see how it plays out. I’m not sure even with Greinke that the Brewers will be able to compete.
